From spending cosy nights at home to attending Christmas-themed parties, this holiday season brings heaps of wonderful opportunities to gather with the ones near and dear to you.
And if you’re looking for something fun, festive, and a little bit different from your normal Christmas scheduling, then you are in luck! This 20th of December, grab some of your friends and family for a night of Christmas carols like no other for the third iteration of ‘A Christmas Cabaret’.
For three years now, A Christmas Cabaret has been part of Tassie’s cheerful Christmas calendar. Be amazed when some of the best local Tasmanian artists and performers, along with some interstate guests, come together to perform all things Christmassy in a Cabaret spectacular. Wouldn’t that be a wonderful way to complete everyone’s Christmas wishlist this year?!?
Lucky for us, we’re on Santa’s nice list this year and we had a chance to talk with the lovely director and producer of A Christmas Cabaret, Ms Taylah Evans, about the creative preparations and the event details.
According to Ms Evans, one of the highlights of this year’s event is the expansion of the star-studded cast. “For the past two years, I was just messaging my friends who are all talented. The artists performing then were those within my circle and connections alone, but this year, I’m excited to have some talented, professional, and big names in the industry who I really look up to,” Ms Evans shared.
“There will also be a lot more dancers from different schools who will all come together. I’m just excited for the expansion and the level of professionalism of the cast,” she continued.
Aside from these, just like Santa, attendees can be prepared to have a belly laugh too & crack up at some points during the show since some creative and funny performers were also invited to come along this year. Not only will there be talented performers but Ms Evans also highlighted how amazing the songs and the choreography everyone will be witnessing during the night.
Since she has been spearheading this event for the past 2 years, Ms Evans shared how everything seems easier and more under control this year compared to the previous years.
“I feel like I’m ahead of schedule this year compared to the last two years. I’m kind of really getting the hang of it now which is very nice.”
Anyone that has been to something like this before will be able to see that putting a show together is not an overnight process & Ms Evans admits that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Being a gifted performer herself, the most challenging part for Ms Evans was often dealing with some of the ‘behind the scene’ aspects of the show like coordinating with the catering and other backstage stuff that she has never done before. But learning something new each year is definitely one of the many things she looks forward to.
If you’re wondering how Ms Evans has sleighed her way to putting up such a magical event to reality, it all began once upon a time in 2020. It was during the peak season of COVID and everyone moved back home when the eureka moment came in. Realising that a lot of singers and dancers from Tassie move away from the state and are spread all over the place to pursue their dreams, Ms Evans thought of this as an opportunity to gather together in one event.
“I just took the opportunity and luckily, I have a lot of connections and performer friends. I started messaging people asking if they would be interested and everyone was super excited and enthusiastic to do it which was really amazing.”
Ms Evans described the genesis of A Christmas Cabaret as a family reunion not only because of artists and performers who moved out of Tassie and came back home but also because of the global pandemic which brought a lot of lockdowns every now and then during that time.
The director and producer also sees the event as a platform for performers like Ms Evans herself to create more opportunities. It also brings dancers together from different schools where younger dancers can perform with professional ones. She perceives this as a great opportunity for both sides to learn from each other while doing the thing they love the most.
“I just love giving that opportunity back to Tasmanian talents and hopefully, I can do that more in different sorts of ways.”
Apart from this, A Christmas Cabaret is personally close to Ms Evans’s heart. Her mum owns a local dance school, Jenina’s Dance Workshop, and she’s very well known for putting up great productions all the time. “I’m sure a lot of people think that my mum helps me out in putting this show together, but I’m proud to say that it is all me and I’ve done everything on my own. That’s why this event is special to me.”
Ms Evans also shared her plans and goals for A Christmas Cabaret moving forward. “I want ‘A Christmas Cabaret’ to be more like a brand eventually with lots of opportunities for performers, different kinds of events, workshops, and little shows here and there. One day, I want it to be huge and possibly be televised too,” she passionately shared.
“I just want it to be a really big show that every performer wants to be in and everyone in Hobart wants to come to.”
The show’s overall running time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes but Ms Evans loves to add little fun things along the way, so it might last a little longer than it is expected (and we’re not complaining at all!).
It will be held at Don Bosco Theatre, Guilford Young College, Glenorchy at 7.00 pm but guests are welcome from 6.00 pm to come and grab a drink, take photos, and find their seats.
You may still book your tickets here for either the show alone or both the dinner and the show. The ‘show only’ tickets upstairs can be booked right up until show time while the ‘dine & show’ has a cut-off until 16th December.
